Recent history of wine - Up until about thirty years ago you could mainly only buy or heard of french wine and german wines, but in recent times you can find wine from all over the world your high street shelves, the modern californian wine industry was only just beginning to surface Australia was mainly a fortified wine producing country but in 1973 Australia produced its first vintage chardonnay South African wines were mainly fortified sherry ,new zealand did not make enough wine to export significantly until the eighties Bulgarian wines did not begin until 1980 and Chilean wine is a recent phenomenon that has grown in the last 15 years
Traditional wine making countries of europe each had regional wine styles of their own the most famous being french wine such as Claret,Burgundy chablis,Champagne, german wines were also very popular such as hocks from the rhine and mosels most other wines were very basic such as wicker covered flasks of chianti which you find in most italian restaurants the famous vin de table
Rioja and Barolo were available but were not considered classics and would be left of most restaurants wine lists, but now you can buy a wide range of Rioja and borolo wines made by many different producers |

The import of wine slowly started to change people were getting more knowledgable about wines and not just the french and german wines but new world wines such as australia and south america but it was,nt until the big boom in demand for califorian wines that the history of drinking styles changed forever most people would never have heard of chardonnay,cabernt sauvignon and merlot but as the new world wines were slowly making to the wine merchants shelves they would mainly be given a grape variety name rather than a brand name now nearly every wine producing country from around the world makes chrardonnay
